Paper collage animals
Some turkeys
The leaves are changing and the wind is starting to feel chilly; must be getting close to Halloween!
My younger students have been drawing and painting pictures of pumpkins! We first look at real pumpkins to examine their form; then we used a black oil pastel to draw what we observe. Second, we mix primary colors into secondary colors to get our beautiful greens and oranges! We paint our shapes! The next day we have art, we cut out our dry pumpkin paintings, collage them into both mini-scenes (individual work) and share out by collaging them also into a big-mural (community work).
Students also use their imagination by adding details to their work like: witches, ghosts, tombstones, bats, or even candies!
We love making murals!
Recently, my younger grades have been making a lot of murals with paper collage! We always practice making mini-murals before moving on to the big big big paper!
One day, we were challenged to create our own wild animal, complete with environment. We used paper collage, glue, but no scissors! We were practicing our fine motor skills by tearing small pieces of paper and layering them to create images.
Then, we moved on to the larger paper on the floor and worked together as a community! We still made animals, but this time, scissors were available. We were challenged to negotiate and talk to each other before anything was glued; this helps us come together and make compositional choices as a group!
Younger grades learned the song “Five Green and Speckled Frogs!” We sang and hopped as we drew and watercolored our own 5 frogs, using a variety of photos and pictures as reference points. We took time to practice our handwriting and recorded all the lyrics to the song. Finally, we made puppets from our watercolor frogs. Many students performed their own version of the song as a puppet show!
Last winter, my younger grades worked both independently and in groups to create a “winter world.” We used paper collage; a variety of pencils, markers and crayons; glue and scissors; and our imagination! These students were challenged to communicate with their peers before placing their paper-collage on our class mural. We had to come together as a community to decide composition!
