Starting to draw portraits with grids…

Drawing with grids! It’s fun and an easy way to wrap your head around proportion and value! My middle schoolers are getting a great start on their portraits! Stay tuned for more updates as we progress!

The first two examples are my “works-in-progress,” one of me and one of Aaron Rodgers, (the best QB to ever play football😎)…

Quimby Comics in progress

We’ve been studying sequential narrative and the comics of local Chicago artist, Chris Ware. Grades k-5 started creating their own stories featuring Ware’s character, Quimby Mouse.

Stay tuned for more!

Back to school! Drawing in PROPORTION!

Welcome back to school! We’ve been very busy in the art room! Grades k-8 have already completed their first lesson on LINES and PROPORTION.

We had a lot of fun modeling our own figurines into at least 5 different positions! We drew from observation and are learning about how to size, or PROPORTION, the human body!

Introducing: GRAPHITE

Younger grades got to use graphite pencils for the first time today! We drew with HB, 3B, 5B, 6B graphites… Using tortillions, students had fun smudging each different graphite; we noticed differences in soft graphite versus harder graphite.

We also played a little drawing game! Everyone drew an object on their table from direct observation. We had up to 60 seconds to draw as fast we could! The results were awesome! Many students were able to really use the smudge technique very well!

(As a little bonus, some students drew “fire-breathing creatures” to really showcase the “smudge” technique:-))
