Practice: self-portraits

3rd grade uses mirrors! We create a picture of ourselves by looking at our reflection! We used two types of graphite pencils: HB and a softer 4B. We also blended by using a stump

Starting to draw portraits with grids…

Drawing with grids! It’s fun and an easy way to wrap your head around proportion and value! My middle schoolers are getting a great start on their portraits! Stay tuned for more updates as we progress!

The first two examples are my “works-in-progress,” one of me and one of Aaron Rodgers, (the best QB to ever play football😎)…

Introducing: GRAPHITE

Younger grades got to use graphite pencils for the first time today! We drew with HB, 3B, 5B, 6B graphites… Using tortillions, students had fun smudging each different graphite; we noticed differences in soft graphite versus harder graphite.

We also played a little drawing game! Everyone drew an object on their table from direct observation. We had up to 60 seconds to draw as fast we could! The results were awesome! Many students were able to really use the smudge technique very well!

(As a little bonus, some students drew “fire-breathing creatures” to really showcase the “smudge” technique:-))
