drawing graphite line shape value

Starting to draw portraits with grids…

Drawing with grids! It’s fun and an easy way to wrap your head around proportion and value! My middle schoolers are getting a great start on their portraits! Stay tuned for more updates as we progress!

The first two examples are my “works-in-progress,” one of me and one of Aaron Rodgers, (the best QB to ever play football😎)…

drawing oil pastels value

5th grade and VALUE

Today, one of the fifth grade classes used their sketchbooks to draw a picture that included different values.

Value is an element of design that refers to how much light there is in a picture.

I am really impressed with the quality of the work! Not only did I see effective use of smudging the pastels (a technique useful for blending colors), I was also pleased to see students take care of materials.

Students who finished their oil pastel drawing moved on to drawing with markers. It is obvious that everyone really enjoyed just sketching. This reminds me that I need to sketch, too!
